Storage container security features explained
Posted in :
Storage container security features come down to a short list of fittings, each with a job, a cost and a point at which it earns its place. Below we set out the equipment in the order we normally specify it, with typical European market ranges for 2026. They vary by supplier, specification and fitting, so treat them as a budget guide.
What does a lock box do on a container?
A lock box is a steel shroud welded over the padlock area, so the padlock sits enclosed and cannot be reached by a cutting tool.
It is welded to the right hand door leaf and closes over the padlock once the doors are shut.
The typical 2026 European range is 90 to 250 euros fitted, depending on steel gauge, handle pattern and whether it is welded on site. Most new units carry one already. On a used container we fit one before anything else.
Which padlock should we fit to a storage container?
Fit a closed shackle padlock at EN 12320 grade 5 or 6. The body encloses the shackle, which is the part any tool has to reach first.
An open shackle padlock leaves the shackle exposed and belongs on a garden shed. The padlock types used on shipping containers differ mainly in how much of the shackle the body covers.
The EN 12320 grades run from 1 to 6. Shackle resistance rises from about 5 kN at grade 2 to 100 kN at grade 6, and key variations from about 1,000 to 20,000 over the same range. We specify grade 5 or 6 for outdoor and high value storage, at roughly 60 to 180 euros.

Why do locking rods, cam keepers and door seals matter?
The factory door gear locks each leaf into the frame top and bottom. Bent rods or worn seals stop the cams from seating properly.
Each leaf carries vertical rods with cams that rotate into keepers on the frame, so a closed door is held at four points, not at the handle alone.
A bent rod keeps a cam out of its keeper and worn seals let water in. We check the door gear on every used unit, and repairs run 40 to 150 euros per door.
Are cross bars and door bars worth fitting?
A cross bar spans both doors and locks them together, adding restraint that is independent of the factory handles and the padlock.
It is a visible deterrent and a physical one, because the doors then have to be dealt with as a pair. Expect 80 to 200 euros for a bar and its keepers.
Do alarms and GPS trackers work without mains power?
Battery alarms and trackers run for months without mains power, but they only report an event. They do not keep anybody out.
Self contained door contacts, PIR alarms and GPS trackers cost roughly 60 to 300 euros plus any subscription for SIM data or monitoring. Plan for the limits:
- Cold weather shortens battery life, so a winter check matters.
- Steel blocks signal, so the antenna sits near a vent or outside.
- An alert is worth little if nobody can reach the site.
Where do lighting and cameras actually help?
Lighting and cameras work on the approach to the container rather than at the doors. They deter, they record faces and they support a claim.
A solar PIR floodlight costs about 30 to 120 euros and a battery or solar camera about 80 to 250 euros, plus storage or SIM costs. Mount the camera to cover the route in, not a close up of the doors.
How does siting add storage container security features for free?
Turn the doors towards a wall, a fence or a second container. If the doors cannot swing open, the contents cannot come out.
This costs nothing and beats most bolt on hardware. Decide the position before delivery, because a loaded container is expensive to move. Our container dimensions guide gives the swing space each door needs.
Can a container be anchored down or towed away?
An empty unit can be dragged or lifted by the right vehicle. Ground anchors, kerbs and a recorded container number all reduce that risk.
Anchor sets, chains and footings typically cost 50 to 200 euros, more with groundworks. On hard standing we anchor through the corner castings, the strongest points on the frame.
Record the container number, the BIC owner code on the doors and photographs. Police and insurers use them to identify a recovered unit.
What protects windows and vents on a modified container?
Every opening cut into the wall is a weak point. Grilles, laminated glazing, shutters and mesh guards put the perimeter back.
The wall is corrugated Corten weathering steel of roughly 1.6 to 2 mm, so on a modified unit the openings decide the strength of the box. We specify welded grilles or bar sets, anti vandal glazing and steel mesh behind vents, at 80 to 300 euros per opening.
Plan this at the drawing stage, as covered in our guide to popular container modifications.
What do the main storage container security features cost?
Most sites are covered by a lock box, a graded padlock and doors that face something solid. The rest depends on value and location.
| Fitting | Typical European range, 2026 | What it stops |
|---|---|---|
| Lock box, welded | 90 to 250 euros | Tools reaching the padlock |
| Closed shackle padlock, grade 5 or 6 | 60 to 180 euros | Attacks on the shackle, key copying |
| Cross bar | 80 to 200 euros | Levering the doors apart |
| Door gear repair, per door | 40 to 150 euros | Doors that never lock into the frame |
| Battery alarm or GPS tracker | 60 to 300 euros plus subscription | Nothing directly, but it aids recovery |
| Solar light or battery camera | 30 to 250 euros | An unlit, unseen approach |
| Ground anchor set | 50 to 200 euros | Dragging or towing the unit |
| Window grille or vent guard | 80 to 300 euros per opening | Entry through a cut opening |
What else do buyers ask about container security?
These four questions come up on almost every enquiry we handle, so here are the short answers we give before a unit is specified.
Does a lock box fit every container?
Most ISO doors take a standard lock box. Some older handle patterns need a box matched to the hasp, which we check before welding.
Can security hardware be added after delivery?
Yes. Welded fittings can be added on site, although fitting before delivery is tidier and cheaper than a separate visit.
Does the padlock grade affect insurance?
Many European insurers ask for a closed shackle padlock at grade 5 or above inside a lock box. Check the policy wording first.
Is a 40 ft container harder to secure than a 20 ft?
No. Both have the same door gear at one end, so the same storage container security features apply. Length changes the contents, not the lock.
